PVC Membrane Conversion, White Plaster Interior, Racing Lanes
Project Assessment
“What needed to be done”
Built in 1990 Memory Square Park Pool was built as an addition to the recreation and senior center for the area. In 2016 the citizens of Louisville, CO passed a ballot measure to allow improvements to the then 25-year-old facilities that were ready to modernized and expanded upon to accommodate the growing size of facility users.
The pool was initially built as a cement-based swimming pool with racing lane tiles, racing T’s and a white plaster interior. Upon its last restoration several years ago – the City opted to have the pool covered with a PVC Lined Interior that was installed several years previously and had its full extent of wear. The Liner had several large patches throughout from small repairs that were made over the previous years. The racing lanes on the interior liner were heavily worn making it difficult to see some of the lines a concern of the Louisville Dolphins Swim Team and an eye sore for the pool. After several years maintaining their PVC membrane, the City of Louisville decided it was time to return to a more permanent and aesthetically pleasing pool interior, plaster.
RENOVATION PLAN
“How it was done”
The PVC Membrane was removed, exposing the pools original plaster surface and blue tile. The surface was then hydro-blasted to fully remove the remaining debris from the surface. This produces a rough substrate for the new plaster interior to adhere to. This creates a mechanical bond, enforcing the adhesion of the plaster to the pool shell and ensures that the interior will last. All the previous waterline and racing tiling was removed, the tile beds were brown coated before installing new dark blue tile. It was requested for the racing lanes to be laid at a 12-inch width rather than the standard 6-inch, giving the lanes a bold presence in the pool.
After the tiling refreshed and the skimmers replaced, the pool interior was finished with traditional white plaster. This is hand applied and troweled to the desired thickness adding the crisp, clean finishing touches the facility anticipated.
